Shepard Fairey, known worldwide as OBEY, is one of the most influential urban artists of our time, and the creator of the iconic “HOPE” image of Barack Obama. In this signed lithograph, “The Woman Who Defeated Pain (Frida Kahlo),” Fairey pays tribute to the strength and resilience of Frida Kahlo, an artist who transformed physical and emotional pain into a universal language of beauty and commitment. With his characteristic style of bold contrasts and powerful graphics, Fairey captures Kahlo’s combative yet poetic essence. The work is part of his series of portraits dedicated to cultural and social icons who have challenged boundaries and inspired generations. Shepard Fairey began by clandestinely pasting stickers of wrestler André the Giant’s face in the 1980s, and that act of “street art” grew into the OBEY phenomenon—a reflection on the power of images and propaganda. This signed lithograph is not only a collector’s piece, but also a dialogue between two legends of art: Frida Kahlo and Shepard Fairey. Shepard Fairey belongs to the same generation of artists as Alessio B., Arsham, Bambi, Banksy, Ben Eine, Blek the Rat, C215, D*Face, Dran, Eelus, Faile, Fin Dac, Gaia, Herakut, Howishisnombre, Imbue, Invader, JR, JonOne, Kaws, Logan Hicks, Martin Whatson, Mr. Brainwash, Nick Walker, Pure Evil, Seth, Speedy Graphito, Swoon, Tabby, and Trust.Icon.
