Shepard Fairey (OBEY) (1970) - "RADICAL CAT OFFSETS"

Shepard Fairey (OBEY) Hand-signed and Dated Lithograph: The large-format screen print "RADICAL CAT" references J. Edgar Hoover, longtime director of the FBI, known for surveilling and persecuting the Black Panthers and numerous political movements and activists in the United States. PRINT DETAIL: Artist: Shepard Fairey (OBEY GIANT) Title: "RADICAL CAT OFFSETS" Shepard Fairey (OBEY) Hand-signed lithograph, dated by hand Limited edition print run Technique: Screen print on cream Speckletone paper, 300 gsm fine art, roughly 80 lb Overall size: 20 x 16 inches Signed, Dated, directly from the Artist Year: 2026 Mint Condition ABOUT: This image of the “Radical Cat,” which I keep getting requests for, was originally created for a feline-themed art show a few years ago. Since “cat video” is a euphemism for the dumbest, lowest-level content you can find on the internet, I decided to try to connect my particular cat image to something meaningful to me in a playful way. I’ve long been a fan of Black Panther activism and I thought of using another euphemism, “black cats,” which in the language of the 1960s/70s referred to fashionable Black people, to emphasize the fact that the Black Panthers were vilified and targeted by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI because they were seen as “radical” and an internal terrorist threat (allegedly). It’s the same nonsense that the Department of Justice under Trump is trying to use against antifascists and other protesters... don’t fall for it! If you’re not aware of Hoover’s mission to crush the Black Panthers, educate yourself. I recommend Bobby Seale’s book, co-founder of the Black Panther Party, “Seize the Time.” And for those of you who love black cats, know that you’re awesome too: a portion of the proceeds from this print will be donated to the ASPCA for the work they do in finding homes for dogs and cats.
