In 1249 the vizier Shams al-Din Isfahani placed his three sons, Kaykaus II, Qilij Arslan IV and Kayqubad II, on the throne together, hoping to preserve Seljuq sovereignty, and coins were struck in all three names. Kayqubad II died around 1254 on a journey to the Mongol court, and in 1257 Kaykaus II, defeated by the Mongols, fled to the Empire of Nicaea.
