Toutes les enchères / Livres, Cartographie & Manuscrits / Sebastian Münster (1489–1552) - Cosmographia Universalis...

This original sheet is a precious Renaissance page taken from the 1550 Latin edition of Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia universalis, printed in Basel by the publisher Heinrich Petri, and focuses on the historic regions of Swabia and Alsace. The front of the page, marked number 687, opens with the chapter on the city of Wangen im Allgäu (Uvangen. Cap. CCLXXXIII). The text describes its status as an imperial city, the fertility of the surrounding fields watered by the Obere Argen river, the proximity to Lake Constance, and the renowned local manufactural specialization in the fabrication of sickles (Falces foenariae), a flourishing trade exported toward Lombardy and Switzerland. The visual composition of the front is enriched by an woodcut illustrating an artisan at work forging and striking a sickle. At the bottom begins the chapter on the noble lineage of the Lords of Waldburg (Origo et successio nobilium dapiferorum Vualdpurgetium. Cap. CCLXXXIIII), feudal lords and seneschals (Truchsessen) historically bound to the Hohenstaufen emperors, whose solemn heraldic woodcut emblem depicting three black passant lions is reproduced. Turning the page, the reverse, numbered 688, continues the narration of this powerful Swabian dynasty focusing on a dramatic historical event: the assassination of King Philip of Swabia in Bamberg in 1208 at the hands of Count Palatine Otto VIII of Wittelsbach (Otto homicida), a crime committed treacherously in the sovereign’s private chambers, of which the text describes the vivid details and the subsequent punishment of the culprit. In the central portion, the historical properties of the family are listed, including the fortified towns of Waldsee, Riedlingen, Sulgau, Mengen, and Munderkingen (Oppida Dapiferorum). The lower section of the page organizes the intricate dynastic branching through a genealogical tree diagram that traces the names of the descendants of the seneschals’ line (including the branches of Ioannes, Iacobus, Georgius, and Christophorus), noting their titles, acquired fiefs, marriages, and military fates over the 14th and 15th centuries.
