Sebastian Münster (1489–1552) - Cosmographia Universalis...

This original sheet is a precious Renaissance page taken from the Latin edition of 1550 of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia universalis, printed in Basel by the publisher Heinrich Petri and part of Liber III dedicated to Germany. The text and the accompanying woodcuts offer a detailed geographical and economic description of the Black Forest (Nigra sylva), described as a rugged mountainous territory rich in pastures, thermal springs such as Wildbad, and dense woods. The illustrations vividly depict the region’s traditional trades, in particular the woodcutter and the craftsman gathering resin (Resina collectio), as well as an overall view of the numerous villages, castles and monasteries (Oppida Nigre sylve) perched between the valleys. The narrative then extends to the nearby Danubian Valley (Vallis Danubiana), analyzing its river basin from the springs to Ulm, and concludes by celebrating the territory’s agricultural abundance and the figure of the great medieval theologian and scientist Albertus Magnus (Albertus magnus). Dimensions 30 x 20 cm It will be shipped by courier.
