Pietro Antonio Novelli (1729–1804) – Portrait of a Noblewoman – Venice, 1769 – Oil on canvas Author: Pietro Antonio Novelli (1729–1804) Title: Portrait of a Noblewoman Era: 1769 Provenance: Venice, Venetian antiquarian purchased in the 70s Technique: Oil on canvas Overall dimensions: 90 × 75 cm, including frame Canvas dimensions: approximately 86 × 71 cm Frame: Important gilded oval frame Signature: P. A. N., with indication 1769 and Venice Restorations: Back label with note of restoration in 1981 Description of the work Important half-length female portrait, attributed to Pietro Antonio Novelli, Venetian painter of the 18th century, dated 1769. The noblewoman is depicted frontally against a dark background, with a composed expression and an elegant gray hairstyle enriched by a light decorative border. She wears a refined dark dress, enhanced by pinkish details on the sleeves, a light border on the décolleté, and a rich mantilla edged with fur. The composition is characterized by the contrast between the luminous skin, the dark background, and the deep tones of the dress. The oval format gives the portrait a solemn and representative stance, while the gilded frame further enhances its scenographic presence. The work is accompanied by a legible signature P. A. N., with the indication 1769 – Venice. On the back there is a handwritten card reporting the following information: Pietro Antonio Novelli Venice 1769 Restored in 1981 Provenance Venice The card constitutes an interesting documentary testimony relating to the attribution history and conservation of the painting. The important dimensions, the oval format, and the gilded frame make this work particularly suitable for a collection of old masters paintings, a historical library, a gentleman’s study, or a classical environment. Condition report The painting shows visible craquelure and signs of aging consistent with its conservation history. The painted surface shows an aged patina and some irregularities visible in photographs. There are some repaints and restorations also visible in photography. The back of the canvas shows aging traces and a handwritten card relating to restoration carried out in 1981. The gilded oval frame is included in the sale and shows signs of time. Potential buyer is advised to examine carefully all photographs, which form an integral part of the condition description. From private collection; purchased in Venice in the 70s NO SHIPPING USA UK SWITZERLAND
