Scuola Lombarda (XV) - San Sebastiano - XL format

Painter from northern Italy, Lombard area, late 15th century. San Rocco Egg tempera on panel, cm 135 × 42 Work from an Italian museum collection 15th century, 1450/1480 Imposing devotional panel depicting Saint Sebastian in full figure, represented according to the traditional martyr iconography: the young saint, almost entirely nude and covered only by a white drapery tied at the hips, presents the body pierced by arrows, with small bleeding wounds distributed over the torso and limbs. A broad golden radiant nimbus frames the slightly reclined head, imparting to the figure an intense sacred dimension. The setting is strongly vertical and monumental. The figure almost entirely occupies the available space, while behind him opens an austere landscape, built through bands of vegetation, small trees and distant mountains beneath a clear sky. The simplicity of the scene focuses attention on the saint and on the original devotional function of the image. Particularly interesting is the painting language: the body is built through a clear, continuous contour line, with simplified but carefully described anatomy; the face, with delicate features and an absorbed expression, retains a late Gothic character, while the greater attention to corporeality and the physical presence of the figure testifies to an approach toward Renaissance culture. Likewise, hair, nimbus, drapery and vegetation are defined by a strongly marked graphic sign, an element that gives the panel a particular narrative immediacy. The iconography of Saint Sebastian had a particularly significant diffusion in the second half of the 15th century, also in relation to the role attributed to the saint as protector against plague epidemics. Studies on 15th-century iconography document precisely in the last decades of the century a notable fortune of these representations. Also the narrow, tall format is significant. Panels with Saint Sebastian of similar proportions were frequently conceived as elements of more elaborate devotional complexes. A particularly interesting comparison, though without implying an attributive relationship, is Saint Sebastian by Francesco Napoletano, dated to the last decade of the 15th century, also on panel and with a very narrow and vertical format (cm 138 × 43). There are also documented compartments with Saint Sebastian belonging to 15th-century polyptychs subsequently dismantled. In light of the visible characteristics, the work can thus be presented as a significant testimony of devotional painting in northern Italy in the 15th century, plausibly referring to the Lombard area, in which late Gothic elements coexist with a growing Renaissance attention to the human figure. The surface also preserves a pronounced historical patina, with craquelure, losses, abrasions and textural inconsistencies compatible with the long conservation history of the work, elements that do not impair overall legibility and visually attest to its antiquity. CONDITION REPORT The painting appears in generally good conservation condition, compatible with its age and with the natural aging of the work. The pictorial surface shows widespread and marked craquelure, particularly evident in the dark areas, as well as physiological unevenness of the varnish, abrasions and traces of previous conservation interventions and additional painting. Overall the work preserves good legibility of the image, particularly of the face and hands, with evident material characteristics and signs of time typical of a very old painting. ~ Historical-Collecting Note ~ For antiquity, iconography, format and devotional character, this 15th-century panel depicting Saint Sebastian presents characteristics fully compatible with display in a museum context, particularly within a Diocesan Museum or a collection dedicated to ancient sacred art. It is not merely decorative, but a material testimony of the religious and figurative culture of northern Italy in the fifteenth century, surviving through over five centuries of history. Acquiring a work of this level means preserving an authentic fragment of Italian historical-artistic heritage. The chronological rarity, the presence of the ancient wooden support, the immediately recognizable iconography and the strong historical identity increase interest for the specialized collector. From a patrimonial point of view, ancient works of this nature can also represent an interesting form of diversification and long-term value preservation, provided purchased under market-consistent conditions and accompanied by adequate documentation and scientific study. Unlike reproducible goods, a fourteenth/fifteenth-century panel is by its nature a unique, finite, unrepeatable asset: its primary value remains cultural and collecting, while any future monetary revaluation cannot be guaranteed. *** Photographic note The photographs of the work were taken using professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better readability of composition, details and painting material. This lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared to viewing the work directly. The photographs are for illustrative and documentary purposes only. Insured shipment Attributive Expertise Report *** For historical-interest reasons, the work cannot be shipped outside the European community"}
