A group of youths is gathered around an older man engaged in an impromptu musical performance: at the center dominates the large percussion instrument, while on the right a young man supports two large plates; the figures are arranged according to a deliberately theatrical and narrative construction. The impoverished environment, almost in shadow, is described through a few but effective domestic and work elements. The attention given to clothes, objects, poses and especially to the characterization of the figures returns that anecdotal, popular and intimately realistic taste characteristic of Costantini’s production. His painting is indeed documented for representing Neapolitan daily life, with children and elders placed in modest interiors and meticulously described.
