Sculpture

A particularly decorative bronze sculpture of a strongly stylized owl, executed in the characteristic geometrical vocabulary of Art Deco. The powerful, almost architectural lines of the head, the large stylized eyes, and the elongated silhouette give the sculpture an impressive presence. From every angle the interplay of lines changes, so the sculpture fits equally well in both a classical and a modern interior. The design is associated in the art and auction market with the work of Dutch sculptor Johan Coenraad Altorf (1876–1955). This specimen is a later bronze edition of the well-known design. An important detail on this exemplar are the existing markings: * In the bronze, the inscription “Coenrad” * French founders/guarantee mark “JB Déposée – Bronze Garanti – Paris” * Model/mold number A6917 The owl is executed in bronze with a handsome dark brown patina. The subtle lighter accents on the protruding parts emphasize the sharp Art Deco forms and give the statue extra depth. The sculpture sits on a tall black marble plinth with natural light veining, giving the whole a monumental and very elegant appearance. A characterful art object for the collector of Art Deco, modernist sculpture, bronze animal figures, and distinctive interior art.
