Sculpture, “Slapende Ariadne”, Frankrijk, late 18e eeuw - 38 cm - Bronze

This bronze statue is based on the famous Hellenistic original of the Pergamene School from the 2nd century BCE, one of the most cherished and well-known sculptures from antiquity. It depicts Ariadne, the daughter of King Minos of Crete, sleeping on the island of Naxos, where she was abandoned by her lover Theseus after she had helped him defeat the Minotaur. The composition captures the moment of quiet vulnerability before Ariadne is discovered by the god Dionysus, who would later take her as his bride.
