Two stunning solid objects made from precious malachite with beautifully sought patterns. These are a tray/pouche and a sculpture of an elephant. Below are the descriptions of the two objects. LEFT Lovely, solid decorative little dish with a total weight of no less than 702 grams. This unique object, which can serve well as a valet tray or small ashtray, measures 5 by 10 by 8 centimeters. It is entirely handcrafted from a single piece of 100% natural malachite, a precious and heavy copper-containing mineral known for its characteristic deep green color variations. This particular collectible piece has been carefully worked, with the interior and the upstanding rims polished to a high gloss. This makes the spectacular, wavy bands and the so-called concentric 'eyes' of the stone stand out to their best advantage. The sides and especially the underside have intentionally been left in their rough, original state. This authentic base shows the fascinating transition from the green malachite layers to the natural, brown-beige host rock matrix, complete with tiny crystal cavities and a light porous structure. This contrast provides unequivocal evidence of natural provenance and rules out any form of modern imitation. The millions-of-years-old mineral was most likely mined in the famed Katanga copper belt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a region worldwide celebrated for the very highest quality malachite. The artisan shaping of this solid gemstone into the current desk accessory dates from the second half of the 20th century. Thanks to the excellent quality of the stone, its natural pattern, and the fact that the dish is not made from compressed remnants, this is an extremely pure and solid object. The patterns flow seamlessly over the entire body, including the flanks and the underside of the belly, confirming absolute authenticity and the solid quality of the stone. The elephant is hand-shaped in a classic, stable stance with the trunk down, which in symbolism stands for strength, wisdom, and protection. As a lovely contrast, there are two light tusks carved by hand from an organic material such as bone or horn. This type of artisanal cutting work originates from the mineral-rich Katanga province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a region worldwide known for the very best quality malachite. The piece dates from the late 20th century to the present and is produced by local artisans for the international mineral and collector market. With compact dimensions of 4.4 centimeters high, 8 centimeters long, and 3 centimeters wide, the figurine has a strikingly solid density, translating to a weight of 150 grams. The figurine is in excellent condition with a beautiful, high-gloss polishing finish that adds depth to the mineral’s layering. On the underside, the authentic, matte traces of the manual saw-and-file process are still faintly visible, as well as a few microscopic natural hollows inherent to the jagged growth of the rough mineral.
