Schumann lernte den Beruf des Steinmetzes und studierte ab 1947 in Hamburg bei Edwin Scharff und anschließend in Stuttgart bei Otto Baum. 'Sein wesentliches Schaffensprinzip waren die Reduktion und das Gleichgewicht zwischen Masse und Leere sowie das Wechselspiel zwischen der Energie des Materials und der gestalterischen Kraft des Bildhauers' (sh-kunst.de).- Auf weiche Rundungen reduzierte Darstellung eines tierischen Liebesaktes.
