Samuel Howitt (c. 1756–1822) - Hunted Elephant

"Hunted Elephant" presents a dramatic and monumental sporting scene depicting a small group of hunters directly confronting a massive, charging elephant within a vast, untamed wilderness landscape. The composition emphasizes the immense scale of the majestic beast against its challengers, utilizing fine tonal shifts to convey the dust, motion, and intense danger of the encounter. This historic plate functions as a definitive visual record documenting imperial field sports and big-game tracking, published in London by the noted print seller Edward Orme in 1813 within a celebrated series on exotic wildlife. Samuel Howitt was a prominent British painter, illustrator, and etcher who, as a self-taught sportsman artist, became celebrated for his anatomically precise and narrative-driven illustrations of wild animals and natural history subjects.
