Salvador Dalí, born on May 11, 1904 in Figueras, Spain, was a Spanish surrealist painter and printer, known for his explorations of subconscious images. He studied art in Madrid and Barcelona, and showed unusual technical skill as a painter. His mature artistic style developed in the late 1920s after discovering Sigmund Freud’s writings about the erotic significance of subconscious images and affiliating with the Parisian surrealists. This painting shows a desert-like landscape with Saint Anthony kneeling in the lower left corner, while he holds a cross aloft. A procession of elephants, led by a horse, approaches St. Anthony and carries symbolic objects that represent temptation.
