Salvador Dali: Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) was a Spanish painter, sculptor and writer, regarded as one of the leading figures of Surrealism. Dalí is known for his technically brilliant and highly detailed paintings, which often depict dreamlike, bizarre and disturbing motifs. His work is characterized by an intense exploration of the unconscious, of dreams, and psychoanalysis, heavily influenced by Sigmund Freud's theories. Dalí's best-known work, "The Persistence of Memory" (1931), shows melting clocks in a surreal landscape and symbolizes the fluidity of time and the relativity of space. This engagement with the unconscious and the dreamlike shares Dalí's interests with other surrealists such as René Magritte, Max Ernst, and Joan Miró. While Magritte often depicted ordinary objects in unusual contexts, Dalí created hyperrealistic scenes notable for their detail and hallucinatory qualities. Max Ernst, known for his experimental techniques and collages, shared Dalí's interest in dream logic and unconscious processes, while Joan Miró explored similar themes through his abstract, biomorphic forms and playful approach to Surrealism. Dalí was strongly influenced by classical painting, especially by artists like Diego Velázquez and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, whose technical prowess he admired and emulated in his own work. Dalí often used classical compositions and techniques to portray his surreal and often provocative subjects, setting him apart from many of his surrealist peers who favored more modern techniques.
