FULL TITLE AND AUTHOR L'Accademia degli Amori. Parma, by Stamperia Carmignani, 1792. The pseudonym “Filandro Cretense” identifies an author belonging to the world of eighteenth-century occasional poetry; further attributions require comparison with specialist catalogues. CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE In 18th-century Italian literature, literary academies represented one of the main places of production and diffusion of occasional poetry. Around them developed a culture based on conversation, the cult of beauty, the celebration of affections, and the search for stylistic elegance. L’Accademia degli amori belongs to this milieu: the title itself evokes the model of academy collections in which authors assumed pastoral or mythological names and composed verses dedicated to love, friendship, and praise. Parma’s 1792 publication is particularly interesting because it coincides with a phase of great cultural ferment in the city, home to important educational and artistic institutions. Stamperia Carmignani produced numerous literary and scientific works for the educated local public. The volume thus offers a direct testimony of late 18th-century literary culture, before the profound transformations brought about by the Napoleonic era. BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR Biographical identification of “Filandro Cretense” does not appear immediately documented in general reference works; as often happens in 18th-century academic literature, many authors used pastoral pseudonyms inspired by Arcadia. The poetic name follows the custom of the Arcadians, who adopted imaginary designations tied to the classical and pastoral world. The author seems to belong to the Emilia–Parma literary milieu, close to the culture of erudites, faculty members, and academicians of the time. PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION The edition was printed in Parma in 1792 by Stamperia Carmignani. The production of short poetic works, often intended to circulate within academic or aristocratic circles, involved print runs generally limited compared to major religious or scientific texts. Copies of this edition are today preserved in Italian and European historic libraries; bibliographic records confirm the edition: Parma, by Stamperia Carmignani, 1792. The presence of an authentic binding and the good overall state of the text increase the collecting interest of the exemplar.
