Polished stainless steel and stained oak, signed and dated to the underside. 11 x 12 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. Collection of Artist's Estate Artist Roy Gussow was born in Brooklyn NY, Nov. 12th 1918. Gussow's sculptures search for harmony and equilibrium of nature inspired elements: forms, spaces, colors, light, and internal rhythms poised in an exquisite realization of the balance of forces and energies. Placements of two or three complementary, interlocking forms on a base. Gussow's joining of architectural space to sculptural forms was influenced both by his studies at Laszlo Moholy-Nagy's Illinois Institute of Design during the 1940s, as well as his sculpture teacher Alexander Archipenko. Gussow taught part-time at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and later at Columbia University in NYC. He maintained a studio on 7th Ave. near 27th street for two years before moving to Long Island City where he converted 3 lots including an former silver plating factory into studio and living space. For decades he was represented by the Grace Borgenicht Gallery and more recently by the Neuhoff Gallery. His work is owned by many museums including MOMA, the Whitney, the Guggenheim, Brooklyn Museum, and various private and corporate collections. Gussow has had numerous solo exhibitions, been included in many group and museum exhibits including 5 times in the Whitney Annual. In 1998 Gussow was awarded a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. He also received an award and medal for his sculpture “Crystal” from the National Academy Museum in Manhattan. Good condition.
