Diamond typically forms octahedral crystals, often with curved and striated faces. Other observed shapes include tetrahedra, dodecahedra, and cubes. The crystals are transparent, colorless, or colored green, yellow, brown by impurities (e.g., nitrogen or boron) or crystal lattice defects, and less commonly orange, blue, pink, red, or gray to black. Diamond is the hardest natural substance. On the Mohs scale of hardness it has a hardness of 10. Its abrasive hardness according to the Rosiwal scale (also called absolute hardness) is 140 times greater than that of corundum. However, the hardness of diamond varies with crystallographic direction (anisotropy). This makes it possible to grind diamond with diamond. In the diamond powder used for this purpose, crystals are oriented in every direction (statistical isotropy), so the hardest among them always acts on the surface to be ground. Diamond is optically isotropic with a high refractive index and high dispersion. It exhibits fluorescence and phosphorescence and is triboelectric.
