ROSTAND (Edmond). Cyrano de Bergerac. A heroic comedy in five acts, in verse. Paris: Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1898. In-8, brown morocco, Jansenist style, interior frame decorated with seven gilt fillets, gilt edges, cover (Noulhac). First edition of the most famous play by Edmond Rostand (1868–1918). First performed in Paris at the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin on December 28, 1897, it was a triumph and ensured its author’s place in history, particularly thanks to its colorful hero. Portrait of Cyrano engraved in heliogravure by Dujardin after a watercolor by Guth. This copy is enhanced with 5 original, out-of-text watercolors by Gaston Trilleau, and 8 original pencil drawings and sketches, including 4 for the famous “nose” monologue (pp. 42–43). Included at the beginning is a double-page illustrated letter addressed to a certain Monsieur Guillon, signed by the artist Trilleau and dated March 14, 1899. From the Robert Desprechins Library, with its engraved bookplate illustrated by Jean Cocteau and dated 1959.
