Claudius II ‘Gothicus’, Probus and Numerian mark successive stages in the empire’s recovery from third-century military crisis. Claudius won a decisive victory over Gothic invaders; Probus restored frontier security through relentless campaigning; and Numerian inherited an army returning from war with Persia, but died before consolidating power. Their brief reigns show how imperial authority depended on military success and the loyalty of the troops.
