CLAUDIUS (AD 41–54) AV Aureus. Lugdunum (Lyon), AD 51–52. 7.82 g. Obverse: Laureate head of Emperor Claudius facing right, displaying a finely modelled portrait with distinctive facial features and remarkably expressive engraving. Reverse: Pax (Peace) advancing right, holding a caduceus, with a serpent before her. A beautifully composed and symbolically rich reverse, celebrating the peace and stability of the Roman Empire under Claudius. Reference: Cohen 67. Provenance: Hôtel Drouot, Paris, auction of 21 January 1992, lot 109. Condition: Extremely Fine, with minor edge bumps. An exceptionally attractive and rare gold aureus of Claudius, distinguished by its magnificent portrait, elegant reverse composition and appealing golden surfaces. The obverse presents a particularly striking imperial likeness, with a powerful expression, finely articulated laurel wreath and impressive sculptural depth. The reverse is equally captivating, featuring an unusually graceful representation of Pax, with beautifully rendered wings and delicate details. The coin possesses a wonderful ancient character, with warm golden toning, pleasing relief and an outstanding overall visual presence. The harmonious balance between the imposing imperial portrait and the refined reverse design makes this a particularly desirable example of early Imperial Roman gold coinage.
