An important 16-volume collection in small-12mo format, bound in contemporary full brown calf, with spines featuring raised bands adorned with gilded motifs and dark green spine labels. The volumes are presented in a beautiful, homogeneous contemporary full-calf binding with some signs of wear and superficial abrasions on some spines and headcaps, but overall still very solid and decorative. Interior generally fresh with superb engraved frontispieces and well-preserved fold-out maps. Small tears to the maps and plans, with no losses. Complete with plates. The monumental work is written by Charles Rollin, former Rector of the University of Paris, professor of eloquence at the Royal College, and member of the Royal Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres. This edition covers the history of Rome from the origins of the founding of Rome to the end of the Republic (Battle of Actium). This complete edition is distinguished by the presence of superb fold-out geographical maps prepared by the king's geographer Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville for the elucidation of the history, including plans of ancient Rome, Syracuse, Italy, and itineraries of military campaigns (such as Hannibal’s expedition). Published in Paris by the Brothers Étienne in 1782 in a “New Edition very exactly corrected.” Magnificent copy, highly decorative.
