ROLEX

ROLEX, SWITZERLAND, REF. 5514/5513, SUBMARINER COMEX, STAINLESS STEEL A fine and very rare, stainless steel, self winding diver's wristwatch with no escape valve Brand: Rolex, switzerland Model: Submariner Comex Reference: 5514/5513 Year: 1974 Case: 4092961 Caliber: 1520, 26 jewels Bracelet: stainless steel Rolex bracelet with deployant clasp, approx. overall length 205 mm. Grading System: EXCEPTIONAL Case: 3-8 (Good , Slightly scratched) Dial: 3-01 (Good , HANDS Original) Movement: 3* (Good , Overhaul recommended, at buyer's expense) EUR: 71,000 - 106,000 HKD: 630,000 - 950,000 CHF: 67,000 - 100,000 JPY: 12,620,000 - 18,930,000 Among professional Rolex watches, COMEX-issued Submariners occupy a category of their own, having been supplied as working instruments to divers operating in the demanding environment of commercial saturation diving. The present watch is especially remarkable for its unusual reference 5514/5513 configuration and the absence of a helium escape valve, a feature described in the supplied research as unique among known examples of the reference 5514. Powered by calibre 1520 and dating from 1974, it belongs to the period in which Rolex and COMEX were actively developing solutions to the effects of helium during prolonged decompression. Its importance is reinforced by the accompanying material, including dive logs, identification, a COMEX knife, flashlight and depth gauge, giving the watch a documentary context rarely encountered with vintage professional Rolex. Here, the scratches, equipment and paperwork are not peripheral details. Together they place the watch within the environment for which it was conceived, transforming it from a collectible Submariner into a tangible record of experimental diving history. The watch belongs to the period in which Rolex's professional diving watches were evolving rapidly in response to increasingly demanding underwater use. Case construction, luminous dial architecture, bezel design and water-resistance were not merely stylistic choices but functional solutions intended for clear reading and reliable operation in difficult conditions. On an early or professionally issued example, the surviving surface, engravings, components and associated documentation become especially significant because they help place the watch within that technical history. The result is a tool watch whose visual character is inseparable from the environment for which it was developed. The ref. 5514 is considered by collectors and enthusiasts as the essential "must have" COMEX model due to its unique reference number. The ref. 5514 was never sold to the public and remained a model reserved solely for the underwater operations specialists COMEX. The present watch is extremely rare and highly desirable because it is the only known ref. 5514 produced without the Helium Escape Valve. We believe that it was among the first watches delivered to COMEX, and therefore, was part of a very small experimental series which did not feature the gas escape valve. This watch was fully serviced by a Rolex retailer in 2003. The watch is accompanied by Rolex retailer overhaul dated 2003, COMEX knife, flashlight, depth gauge, and paperwork including dive logs and identification. BiographyCOMEX (Compagnie Maritime d'expertise) A French company specialized in deep sea exploration that made great advances in saturation diving in the 1960's and 70's. At the time COMEX divers wore Rolex Submariners, ref. 5513. These were rated to 200 meters, sufficient for most dives. However, during the 10-day decompression period following saturation dives, the watch crystals tended to explode due to pressure from helium that had built up in the watch. To rectify this, Rolex invented the gas escape valve (Swiss patent 492246). This simple spring-loaded one-way valve was first fitted to the standard Submariner 5513, which was then given the Ref. 5514. Further research led to the first "Sea-Dweller, Submariner 2000", Ref. 1665, in 1971.
