Robert Johnson (NC, 1943-2021), Canoeing Down the Sewanee River

Oil and acrylic on canvas, 2006, signed and dated at lower right, framed. Stretcher size 30 x 40 in.; Frame dimensions 31 1/4 x 41 3/8 in. Robert Johnson spent the first fourteen years of his life in Caracas, Venezuela, where the region’s rich flora and fauna inspired a lifelong fascination with the natural world and humanity’s relationship with it. In 1972, he settled in the artist community of Celo, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, where the surrounding landscape continued to inform his artistic practice. His meticulously detailed paintings and drawings have been exhibited at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, the Asheville Art Museum, the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia, and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem. Among Johnson’s most ambitious projects was Safe Spaces, a four-year undertaking during which he visited all 41 North Carolina state parks, documenting their diverse flora, fauna, and geology through paintings and drawings. This extensive body of work reflects his keen powers of observation and enduring commitment to celebrating and preserving the natural world. Good estate condition.
