British artillery / cannon sighting scope Period: World War I. Manufacturer: W. Ottway & Co. Ltd., Although there is no inscription on the scope, these military optical instruments and aiming scopes were all manufactured by Ottway. Identical examples of these W. Ottway & Co. artillery aiming scopes can be found in several military museums in London. They are dated 1915/1918. • heavy construction entirely in brass ; • conical body ; • large front optical assembly ; • lugs/mounts under the body ; • large knurled ring near the eyepiece ; • worn black paint on the adjustment parts ; • design intended to be mounted on a gun carriage rather than held by hand. The scope still contains all its prisms inside to perform the adjustments. Rare piece.
