Rie (Dame Lucie) Collection of correspondence between Rie and Harley Carpenter, six signed letters and postcards, earliest correspondence from 1975; and other various related ephemera, including a Bonhams catalogue from the 1997 'Sale of a Lifetime', two signed photographs, a letter from Dr. Max Mayer, letters slightly age toned, with fold lines, and some small tears, catalogues in original paper wrappers, posters slightly rippled and creased, otherwise a generally bright and clean collection, v.s., 1975-2010 *** Harley Carpenter, with Geof Walker, was an avid collector of 20th century British studio ceramics, and over the years, developed a close friendship with renowned ceramicist Dame Lucie Rie. The letters from Rie exclaim thanks for orders, exchanges of photographs, and mention Dr. Max Mayers, whose type-written letter is also featured in the lot. Mayers was the trusted physician and close friend of Dame Lucie Rie, later a beneficiary of her estate. The letter is dated 7th April 1995, a week after her death, and possibly never read aloud, as her final instructions were for a silent funeral service, with no eulogy, no songs, and not a single word spoken.
