Description This large-format canvas brings together on a single plane a still life of fish and the imagery of a counter. Grouper, viperfish, painted in a saturated red, crowd around a hamburger, a French fry cone, pickles and wedges of lime. Above, the words “Poisson” and “Rouge” are painted in graffiti letters, acid green on a gray background. The background is broken into flat fields: ochre band, golden column, checkerboard, dotted lines. The drawing remains sharp, the volumes modeled. The whole leans toward pop and Belgian still life, without anecdote: the title is written within the painting, and the motif repeats it. With its 150 × 100 cm format and the density of color, the work commands a wall and acts as a focal point in a contemporary interior. Biography Richard Calcus, born in 1948, is a Belgian painter based in Jemappes, in the Borinage of Mons. His paintings, signed and often located on the back of Champ de Bataille Avenue, circulate on the Belgian and British markets. The execution of Poissons rouge, between close figuration and pop lettering, places this piece within his production from the late 1970s and early 1980s.
