RHOMBUS Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Gulf of Papua 19th / 20th century Wood with a patina resulting from age and use; traces of pigments H. 48 cm – W. 12 cm Large rhombus carved with a human face. Rhombuses are oval-shaped planks often decorated with anthropomorphic or geometric motifs. Most are pierced at one end so they can be spun through the air on a string. This causes a vibration or “hum” that produces a very distinctive sound, which is perceived as the “voice” of spirits and ancestors.
