The matrix is solid manganese oxides-rich rock, that was actually used as manganese ore in Moanda in the 1980's when this specimen was found. A rare chance to acquire a nice African rhodochrosite! The Moanda mine, discovered in 1951 and developed industrially from the late 1950s by the Compagnie Minière de l'Ogooué, sits on one of the world's richest manganese deposits, hosted in ancient black shales of the Francevillian Basin. Specimen-grade rhodochrosite on manganite came out of the mine only briefly, in the 1970s and early 1980s, and none has been found since, making this combination genuinely scarce on today's market.
