Founder of the Franciscan Order, he was proclaimed a saint by Pope Gregory IX in 1228. Inspired to lead a Christian life of poverty, he became a mendicant and an itinerant preacher. He is commonly depicted with a brown robe and a rope tied at the waist, with three knots symbolizing the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
