RAYMOND CAUCHETIER (1920–2021), Breathless, Jean-Luc Godard. ‘Oh!

Contemporary inkjet print, Ultrachrome inks on Hahnemühle baryta paper, Picto laboratory. Dimensions: 35.4 x 26.8 in Raymond Cauchetier used this vintage plate, dating from 1959, to create the layout for the photo-novel Breathless, intended for the newspapers *Le Parisien libéré* (daily, 1969) and *Chez nous* (bi-monthly, 1970). For these publications, he cut out all the photographs from the original sheet. Recently, Kaoru Cauchetier pieced this sheet back together from the fragments cut out by Raymond 56 years ago. With the help of François George from the Picto laboratory, she was able to bring the spread back to life exactly as she had imagined it: after all these years, the scattered fragments have finally found their rightful place. This reconstruction is a unique piece: there is no other copy, nor will there ever be.
