The naturally high-gloss glaze forms because the living animal coats its shell with the mantle, protecting it from deposits. This shell was collected from the reefs of Bogo (Cebu). The fine pattern on the dorsum is interrupted by an irregular, light longitudinal line—the exact point where the mantle meets, giving each shell an individual fingerprint.
