Rafael Cortiella (1931–2019) was one of the great illustrators in this country, in addition to being a draftsman, painter, and artist of advertising and film posters. His covers for romance novels, Westerns, horror, science fiction, crime, and adventure are spectacular, brimming with power and dynamism. This notable body of work was published in countries such as Spain, England, Germany, and France, as well as in almost every part of the world. He began his artistic studies at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios de La Lonja. Around the age of 17, he published his first work: the Don Triqui comic strips (Ed. Ameller), humorous adventures of a married couple published in small landscape-format booklets; these stories had originally been started by Ayné. Later he worked for the publisher Símbolo, drawing comics such as Cobalto, Comando Roy, and Clay Sutton; the latter was one of the titles that gave him initial popularity and in which he appeared as the sole creator. During the 1950s and 1960s he diversified his work with publishers such as Toray, Ferma, and Bruguera, producing western, adventure, war, and romantic-themed comics. He also collaborated with the agency Selecciones Ilustradas, run by Josep Toutain, creating romantic stories for Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Toward the 1960s he primarily focused on illustration, creating paperback covers for the legendary Bruguera publishing house and for European markets through various agencies. Among his works, the covers for El Javanés — another sailor-hero created by artist Carrillo — and for the juvenile novel series Puck stand out. Cortiella moved to Paris for a time to continue his artistic studies and later to Brussels, where he attended the École Supérieure des Arts de la ville. He worked for the German publisher Bastei Verlag illustrating covers for the character Lassiter (from the Western genre) and received the Gold Medal of Fine Arts, awarded by the publisher itself, in recognition of his twelve-year collaboration with them. His magnificent covers for novels and books on a wide range of topics can be found in hundreds of publications from many countries. Cortiella was one of the founders and collaborators of the Club Dhin, created by several artists to defend authors’ rights. In the 1970s he delved into painting and embarked on a successful career as a painter — notable especially for his tributes to the female figure — and he exhibited his work in various art galleries. He also ran a drawing and painting studio for almost 15 years together with fellow illustrator and painter Ángel Badía Camps. In the 1980s, with the rise of the video market, Cortiella took on illustrating hundreds of covers, signing his work as “Joan.” Among other notable projects are his illustrations for the boxes of Madelman toys. And, as the slogan of that toy brand stated — but applied to drawing — Cortiella could draw anything.
