The work holds a strong sense of place, grounded in lived experience and memory. Rather than describing the landscape in detail, the composition brings forward its defining features, allowing the presence of the site to remain clear and immediate. Broad areas of ochre are laid across the surface with a direct and confident hand, creating a simplified but resolute structure. Forms are reduced to their essential shapes, with shifts in tone indicating the rise of land and the movement through it. The palette is restrained, drawn from natural pigments, reinforcing the connection between the painting and the ground it represents. As one of the first women to begin painting in Warmun, McKenzie played a key role in establishing painting practices for Gija women.
