Punu mask from Gabon (No reserve price)

The History of the Punu Mask The Punu are a Central African people who migrated to settle mainly in the southwest of Gabon (notably in the Ngounié basin) around the 18th century. For the West, the discovery of this art was a true aesthetic shock. The explorer Paul Du Chaillu was the first European to observe these white masks in 1865. In the early 20th century, their serenity, the purity of their lines, and their almond-shaped eyes deeply fascinated and influenced modern Western artists, such as Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso. Their Spiritual and Social Function Contrary to appearances, this mask does not represent a living person, but embodies the spirit of an idealized female ancestor who has returned from the afterlife (moukala). Its function is twofold: 1. The link with the world of the dead and the ancestors: The mask is covered with white kaolin (pembé), a sacred local clay. In Central Africa, the color white is not the symbol of purity in the Western sense, but the color of the realm of spirits, of death, and of clairvoyance. The mask thus serves as a temporary receptacle for the spirit of an ancestor to interact with the living. 2. Social regulation and protection (Secret Societies): The community’s social cohesion was ensured by male confraternities, notably the secret society Okuyi (or Mukudji). The mask played a role during major communal events: • Funeral rituals and mourning-levee ceremonies. • Initiation rites for the young. • Moments of crisis to drive away bad forest spirits or restore justice.
