Tapis "Tree of Life" with Birds – Magnificent Indo/Pak hand-knotted rug, measuring 137 x 220 cm. This rug is a masterful example of the classic theme of the "Tree of Life" with birds, executed with finesse and remarkable detail. Composition and Décor The composition is centered on a vivid red field, adorned with a large and elegant Tree of Life with flowering branches that extend to full height. This tree is populated with a genuine menagerie of exotically detailed birds: Two majestic peacocks, symbols of royalty and immortality, are placed on either side of the base of the trunk. Their tails are spread, showing the distinctive eye motifs. A pair of tall wading birds (likely herons or storks), with long graceful necks, is positioned dominantly in the upper register. Many other smaller birds, with varied plumage (pheasants, small passerines), are perched on the branches, among dense flowering foliage. At the base of the tree, one can discern more complex flowers and detailed botanical motifs, on a slightly contrasting ground. The central field is framed by several distinct borders: The main border is particularly impressive, with large alternating motifs on a deep turquoise-green background, filled with intricate palmettes and golden and red flowers. Narrower secondary borders, one inner (on ivory background with entwined vine motifs) and one outer (on gold background with almond motifs), frame the main one, adding depth and contrast. Remarkable: Persian calligraphic inscriptions are observed in a cartouche at the top of the main border, a sign of additional prestige.
