Precious Earrings with 10.35 Ct “Old European Cut” Diamonds & Brilliant-Cut

Two antique diamonds in the “Old European Cut” serve as the sparkling focal points of these precious earrings. The two stones, totaling approximately 7.05 ct, were cut c. 1900. Their shape is typical of turn-of-the-century diamonds: Their table is slightly smaller than that of modern brilliant-cut diamonds, but the so-called upper facets surrounding the table take up more space. As a result, the stone possesses a stronger fire than modern diamonds—that is, a greater ability to split light into the colours of the rainbow and transform it into a colourful sea of sparks. The diamonds are set in white gold and are accompanied by more than three carats of smaller diamonds. Two dozen brilliant-cut diamonds complement the large diamonds to form sparkling blossoms. Eight smaller, equally antique diamonds form the top clasp and conceal the practical and secure yellow-gold leverbacks. They lend the earrings a certain warmth that complements the warm hue of the two large diamonds. The earrings were created in the 1980s, inspired by Belle Époque designs. Their focal points—the two large old-cut diamonds—as well as the smaller diamond elements originate from pieces of jewellery dating c. 1900. They were remounted in the 1980s and enhanced with the flower-shaped white gold settings and modern brilliant-cut diamonds. We were able to acquire the earrings as part of a collection of high-quality jewellery from Stuttgart. An independent appraisal of the quality of the materials accompanies the pair.
