Precious Art Déco Brooch with 3.90 ct Diamonds in Platinum, c. 1930

This impressive platinum brooch combines the elegance of Art Deco with exquisite craftsmanship. Five large old-cut diamonds weighing a total of 1.85 ct form the radiant centerpiece in the form of a sparkling row. The larger old-cut diamonds are complemented by 72 smaller old-cut and single cut diamonds weighing a further 2.05 ct. The total weight of the diamonds together is therefore around 3.90 ct. The shield-shaped design of the large piece of jewellery is characteristic of the Art Deco heyday: a flat, openwork composition whose geometric austerity contrasts with sparkling gemstones. Such shapes enjoyed great popularity in the 1920s and 1930s and were regarded as a symbol of modern jewelry. They were part of a lady's evening wardrobe and were considered an indispensable part of a jewelry set, but it is rare to come across pieces as large and magnificent as this one. Each individual diamond is carefully set in platinum, whose subtle appearance allows the gemstones to take center stage. Shadow gaps and the artful technique of milgrains, in which the platinum surface is broken into countless tiny facets, enhance the brilliance of the gemstones and create a lively interplay of light and depth. The curved finish of the surface emphasizes the fine volume of the brooch and gives the two-dimensional pieces of jewellery a slightly three-dimensional appearance. The jewel is both representative and wearable. It came to us from Berlin-Schöneberg and comes with a detailed appraisal.
