Prachtige antieke houten wagenkist (paardenbok /...

Beautiful antique wooden wagon chest (horse box / coachman’s bench) from the 19th century. This authentic piece of folk art originally served at the front of a traditional wooden farm wagon or carriage. The coachman would take a seat on the distinctive slanted seat to operate the reins, while the elegantly beveled upstanding rim provided support for the back. Under the seat there is a generous, built-in storage space where tools or horse feed were kept at the time. On the sides the chest is still equipped with the original, sturdy wrought-iron hanging rings. With these, the bench was strapped to the rails of the wagon with heavy chains. The object is in good lived-in antique condition with a stunningly beautiful, well-worn patina that bears witness to decades of history. Today this robust piece of furniture is a highly sought-after and unique focal point in a country, sober, or industrial interior – for example as a firewood box, a unique plant container, or a storage bench. Material: Pine, oak, wrought iron Period: 19th century (ca. 1850-1880) Condition: Good antique condition with natural aging and a gorgeous patina. Constructively solid.
