PORTUGAL 1928 (Jun 28) Frank Courtney attempted first East-West Atlantic crossing to Canada with Portugal 1$60 applied and 'Primeiro Correio Aero Trans-Atlantico Lisboa-America' cachet. The cover is inscribed (and signed) by Capt. Courtney thus: 'This envelope was carried in the Dornier-Napier Wal' seaplane from Portugal to near the Newfoundland coast, where the plane caught fire and came down at sea. Crew and mail were rescued by S.S Minnewaska (Aug 2 1928) and mail was forwarded by usual channels. Montreal b/stamp for 7th August. Very scarce, particularly so with such wonderfully authentic provenance.
