Under Sigismund III and John II Casimir, the Vasa dynasty tied Poland and Lithuania to contested hereditary claims in Sweden. Sigismund’s loss of the Swedish throne deepened prolonged conflict over Livonia, while John ruled through Swedish invasion and devastating warfare across Ruthenia. These crises weakened royal authority and the realm’s finances, and John ultimately abdicated.
