Bacchus head Henri Dalloz developed in 1863 a revolutionary sculpting machine (a pantograph with 14 heads) with which a whole series of identical, detailed figural pipes could be machined at the same time. This heralded the industrial production of briar pipes in the French Jura. The machine was used to make portrait pipes of famous historical figures, philosophers and mythological figures, such as Voltaire, Bacchus, King Edward VII and Victor Hugo, and were finished by hand.
