Peter Paul Rubens, also known in Italy as Pietro Paolo Rubens (Siegen, 28 June 1577 – Antwerp, 30 May 1640), was a Flemish painter. His work, according to Giuliano Briganti, «can be considered the archetype of the 'baroque'»; for Luigi Mallé, he opened the way to the tumultuous European Baroque, particularly Nordic and French.
