Pieter Martinus Gregoor (1784-1846) - Hollands Pastorale Scene - NO RESERVE

Artist: Pieter Martinus Gregoor (1784–1846) Title: Hollands Pastorale Scene Medium and support: oil on panel Dimensions: 33.5 × 43.5 cm; with frame 49 × 58.5 cm Signature: monogram P.M.G., lower right Pieter Martinus Gregoor was born in Dordrecht and, after a period of training in Antwerp, worked there as a landscape and animal painter. He received his first drawing and painting instruction from Martinus Schouman and continued his education at the Antwerp Academy of painting under Carpentero. The landscape and animal painter Balthasar Paul Ommeganck was also among his teachers. Gregoor belongs to the Dordrecht painters who, in the nineteenth century, continued the tradition of the pastoral animal piece. His historical position lies within the revival of this genre, in which seventeenth‑century examples were reworked. In his animal painting, the influence of Ommeganck’s work is especially documented. His training thus connects Dordrecht artistic practice with the Antwerp tradition of landscape and animal painting. Object description In the foreground, with grass, low plants, and bare ground, lie sheep and a goat. A brown sheep stands behind the centrally placed white animals. To the right is a figure in reddish-brown clothing with a broad-brimmed hat, beside a white-brown dog. Tall deciduous trees frame the scene on the left. Behind the animals follow low undergrowth, small buildings, and a gently rolling distance. The cloudy sky contains pink, gray, and bluish tones; in the terrain, ocher, brown, and green predominate. Technique and material analysis The scene is executed in oil on panel. The coats have been modeled with short, variably directed brushstrokes and light accents that indicate the wool texture. Separate color touches articulate the foliage, while broader brushstrokes appear in the sky. UV fluorescence analysis has revealed some local retouchings. This finding documents later interventions but does not determine their precise age or the full extent of earlier treatments. Composition and form analysis The tall group of trees on the left forms a vertical boundary opposite the open landscape on the right. The animals are positioned low in the image, beneath a sky that occupies more than half of the picture plane. The standing sheep interrupts the rhythm of the rounded, lying animal bodies. The light-colored coats contrast with the dark vegetation and focus attention on the foreground. Overlaps, the scale reduction of the buildings, and the fading contours of the hills build spatial depth. The reddish-brown garment forms a distinct color accent on the right, while warm light areas connect the group of animals with the ground in front of them. Stylistic and art-historical context The image type aligns with the Dutch tradition of the pastoral landscape and the “veestuk” (animal piece), in which animals occupy an independent place within the landscape composition. In Dordrecht, this tradition regained significance around 1800 through the reassessment of Aelbert Cuyp and the integration of his sunny landscapes by Jacob van Strij. This development provides a historical framework for Gregoor’s activity. The warm light, the resting animals, the tree avenue, and the hill-bound distance connect the work with this pastoral repertoire. Within Ommeganck’s Antwerp painting tradition, detailed animals were combined with idealized landscapes and a light handling oriented toward Dutch seventeenth‑century examples. The placement within Romanticism concerns chiefly the atmospheric coherence of landscape and animals, supported by the soft color gradations in the sky and the gradual transition to the distance. Comparable artists Jacob van Strij, Pieter Gerardus van Os, Jan Baptist Kobell II, Balthasar Paul Ommeganck, Jean-Louis Demarne Condition The surface shows local fine craquelure. Some old retouchings are present. Conclusion Hollands Pastorale Scene by Pieter Martinus Gregoor links the landscape animal piece with the pastoral order and atmospheric light effects of the Romantic landscape. The emphasis lies on the animal group within a gradually receding landscape space. Local craquelure and some old retouchings characterize the established condition.
