Hercules the Archer, (after Antoine-Emile Bourdelle). Reinforced plaster with an ivory finish. Makers mark and cast codes on the rocks below the figure's right heel. 34 x 28 x 8 in. (86.4 x 71.1 x 20.3 cm) Notes: This physique era cast is likely attributable to Athens Studio Los Angeles. Athens Studio advertised similar plaster casts in Physique Pictorial. An advertisement in the August, 1952 issue of Physique Pictorial reads: "A nationally known sculptor has made available for the first time these beautiful Physique Statues cast in strongly reinforced plaster with Ivory finish. Twelve inch statuette: $5.00 (Colored to oder $8.00)." P. 11. The scale of this cast is unusually large, therefore, suggesting a very limited number where made. Condition Condition consistent with age, the arm holding the bow and the bow itself have been cracked and repaired in the past. Minor chipping and soiling. Overall shows very well.
