Photo album - Photos 24x30cm Scrapbook d'un photographe amateur de Kyoto

Scrapbook of an amateur Kyoto photographer, Kazuo Hofuku (保福一男), covering at least 1957 to 1977. Kraft album labeled “SCRAP BOOK” with a three-foil binding, with an index page printed, containing 30 large era silver gelatin prints in the Japanese yotsugiri format (4ツ切り, about 25 x 30 cm), each differing in size, noted on the back of a print. Album dimensions: 28 x 37 cm. The photographer is identified by his competition entry forms, handwritten in pencil on the back of several prints: name, address in the Nishijin district (Kamigyō ward), title, place, date and complete technical data. One print bears the signature “PHOTO by 保福.” Born around 1927, he worked for Kyoto City Transport Bureau, and was a serious amateur active in photography competitions for twenty years, from the 1950s medium format 6 x 6 to the 1970s 35 mm. The interest of the lot lies in this coherence: the same gaze on Kyoto, its region and Osaka over two decades, in abundant documentary-era large prints. Contents: “列車待つ一時” (A Moment Waiting for the Train), Kyoto Station, October 8, 1957: maiko and geiko among travelers and suitcases on platform 2. Full back label: Olympus Six, Zuiko 75 mm f/2.8 lens, 1/50 s, f/8, Neopan SS film, D-76 developer, Gekkō paper grade 3. “嫁ぐ日” (The Day She Marries), Miyama, November 5, 1977: a village wedding passes in the background, behind a stone lantern and a gravestone in the foreground, under the mountain. On the back: 35 mm, 28 mm lens, 1/125 s, f/8, Neopan SSS film, Gekkō V3 paper, signed “PHOTO by 保福.” Studies of nature and graphic compositions. Dragonfly on bare branches, titled on the back “赤トンボ” (red dragonfly): 35 mm body, 50 mm lens, f/8, 1/125 s, clear weather. Sculpted trunk in a Chinese-shadow outline under an awning: 35 mm, 50 mm, f/11, 1/250 s. The two prints are mounted with a black border and produced on Fuji Neopan SS film. Also: branch with holes in the leaves, dandelion seed head on a black background, cloud of seeds, susuki grass before the clouds, two silhouette of faces. Kyoto Jidai Matsuri (Festival). Portrait of Shizuka Gozen captioned “49年度時代祭衣裳コンクール” (costume photography contest, 1974). Two Kazunomiya prints distinguished in 1975: one captioned “佳作作品” (honorable mention), the other “入選作品” (selected work), with model credit, a student of Ikenobō Junior College. These two prints are mounted on white margins with a black border, a typical presentation for contest prints. Also a lady in an uchikake in front of a lattice-window, and a view of the procession with palanquins and ladies of the court along a boundary wall. Hanamachi houses, most likely in Gion: maiko from behind at the threshold of a house; an old woman in the doorway gap; maiko in an alley, before flowered noren and a Kirin Lemon sign; two views of the same façade with calligraphed noren, one with a young woman in a pale kimono and parasol, the other with an old woman and a child on the threshold; geiko and a young woman in furisode on stone steps. Association plaques visible on the doors. Street scenes and documentary shots: four women seen from behind on a sidewalk in Umeda, Osaka, captioned on the back “大阪(梅田)” and taken with a wide-angle 28 mm (1/60 s, f/5.6, Neopan SS); workers with wooden-wheeled carts and sifted baskets in a riverbed, photographed in a high-angle view from a bridge; a woman running in heavy rain beside a car. Portraits of young women: lace blouse with a rose pattern in backlight, striped top and long skirt, bell-bottom jeans in a woods, a young woman under a Japanese-style parasol in a low-angle shot, white cap, bright smile, close-up in side light. Dating: from 1957 (Kyoto Station) to 1977 (Miyama), with contest captions dated 1974 and 1975, confirmed by fashion, vehicles and equipment described on the backs of the prints. Condition: sold as is, with considerable wear from use. Tears on several pages, remnants of adhesive paper and glue, bent corners on several prints. Silvering on the edges of several prints. Some prints mounted upside down or skewed, as arranged by the photographer. See photos. Prints mounted on the pages, mostly not removable; some lift and reveal their verso.
