Phoenicia, Marathos. Ca. 166-151 BC. Æ (Bronze, 15 mm, 4.24 g). Considered R1 (Rare) in Hoover, Handbook of Coins of the Southern Levant. Obv: Turreted bust of Tyche right, palm branch over shoulder. Rev: ("MRT", Marat in Phoenician). Marathos standing left, holding aphlaston and leaning on column. Aradian era date to left. Phoenician letters to left and right. Reference: Hoover, Handbook of Coins of the Southern Levant, type 202. Marathos was an important Phoenician city on the Syrian coast, opposite the island city of Arados. Long connected politically and economically with Arados, it developed greater autonomy during the Hellenistic period and issued its own coinage. Its fertile coastal territory and position on Mediterranean routes supported prosperity, while rivalry with Arados eventually led to conflict and the city’s decline.
