Philips 19RB222 – F.T. Mazzucchelli – Orange Space Age FM Radio – 1975 Design A sculptural Philips 19RB222 FM tabletop radio in vivid orange and black, combining expressive Italian Space Age styling with the tactile appeal of analogue audio. The model is documented in the Plastic Design Collection of the Design Museum Brussels, which credits F.T. Mazzucchelli and dates the design to 1975. The museum’s orange-and-black example is catalogued under inventory number PLAS.0395, providing a valuable reference for the model’s place in the history of plastic design. DESIGN AND DETAILS The cabinet has a distinctive low, flowing silhouette. Its broad upper surface curves into a rounded rear section, while the gently undulating front edge frames a recessed black panel. The result is an unusually organic shape that changes character when viewed from the front, side or above. The vibrant orange shell contrasts beautifully with the black fascia and crisp white tuning markings. On the left, the horizontal FM scale and sliding tuning control create a compact instrument-panel effect. On the right, the loudspeaker grille forms a rhythmic pattern of elongated slots, with the Philips signature positioned beneath it. Two silver-coloured rotary controls sit on the right-hand side, their shaped edges providing a tactile grip. Alongside them, circular ventilation openings add another distinctive geometric detail. The combination of sculpted plastic, contrasting surfaces and carefully arranged controls makes this radio particularly appealing within a Space Age, Pop or modernist interior. TESTED OPERATION The radio has been tested for FM reception and sound reproduction through its built-in loudspeaker. It still delivers excellent volume, with a strong and lively sound for its compact size. The external speaker connection has also been tested using a separate loudspeaker, as documented in the photographs and demonstration video. Both front indicator lights are working: • Red indicator: the radio is switched on. • Green indicator: correct station tuning. A video demonstrating operation, the indicator lights and the external speaker test is available here: https://youtu.be/k4GdmRKocn8 IMPORTANT: The external loudspeaker shown in the photographs and demonstration video is NOT included in the sale. It is shown solely to document the external speaker test. The lot consists of the Philips radio with its attached power cable. A documented design model with a distinctive silhouette, attractive orange finish and tested FM operation—equally suited to a vintage audio collection or a carefully curated interior. This is an authentic, pre-owned vintage item. Its condition and tested functions are described above. “Tested and working” refers to the functions checked at the time of testing; it does not imply a complete electronic restoration or replacement of all ageing components. Vintage electronic components may require maintenance over time. Radio reception depends on location, signal strength, antenna positioning and interference from surrounding electrical devices. Reception at the buyer’s address may therefore differ from the demonstration. Some background hiss, minor hum or occasional control noise can occur in vintage analogue equipment. Any significant known fault is disclosed in the description; these general observations do not replace the stated condition of this particular radio. Please examine all photographs and the demonstration video carefully, as they complement the written description and document the item’s appearance and performance. Close-up photographs may emphasise small marks. Colours may vary slightly with lighting, camera settings and screen calibration. Dimensions and weight are approximate. Use only a mains voltage compatible with the appliance’s voltage setting. A plug adapter does not convert voltage. The radio will be checked again before dispatch and carefully protected with double-box packaging. Packing and pre-dispatch condition will be documented. Only the items expressly included in the description form part of the sale. The external demonstration speaker is excluded. Please keep all communications concerning the transaction within Catawiki. These notes supplement the description and do not override Catawiki’s applicable terms or the buyer’s statutory rights.
