PHILIPPINES. Immaculate Conception Silver medal, 1904. NGC MS-63. Honeycutt-73. Diameter: 48 mm. By Z.H. Tied for second finest certified with one other example on the NGC population report, only one finer (MS-64). Obverse: Madonna flanked by Church right, beach and ship left, legend above "SINE. LABE CONCEPTA *1854*"; Reverse: Stylized arms with three shields, sun above, wreath below, order of the Golden Fleece below, legend above "QUINCUAGESIMO ANIVERSARIO DE LA INMACULADA" and in exergue "REG. ET PONT. UNIV. S. THOMAE/ MANILA DICIEMBRE - 1904". Nicely preserved and attractive, this seldom encountered issue boasts a strong strike with well formed design features. The surfaces display a light gray coloration with a thin veneer of tone adding a bit of contrast. A highly sought after issue, especially so in this high state of preservation. Not to be confused with the virgin birth of Jesus, the Catholic doctrine of Immaculate Conception, conceived by traditional means, God intervened to preserve her soul from original sin.
