Petrus Regout - Plate (4) - Ceramic

Special set of four antique earthenware plates by the famous Maastricht manufacturer Petrus Regout, produced in the second half of the 19th century. The plates depict a historical scene of a military care post under the Red Cross flag. At the center is a wounded soldier with a bandaged leg, being tended to by a nurse. In the background we see other figures near a building and the clearly recognizable Red Cross flag. The scene is executed in refined, multicolored transfer-print. The lightly ribbed rims of the plates are finished with two dark green borders, beautifully framing the historical tableau. A special museum connection A plate with exactly the same decor and factory mark is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum records this object under inventory number BK-1983-213, dating it to circa 1860–1890. This museum reference provides a valuable historical anchor for the identification and dating of the offered plates. Historical significance The nineteenth century was an important period in the development of organized military medical aid and the international Red Cross movement. The decor reflects this history and forms a tangible reminder of care for wounded soldiers. Consequently, the plates are not only interesting for collectors of Maastricht pottery, but also for enthusiasts of military, medical and social history.
